Lincoln, NE is located in Lancaster County and was originally founded as a village in 1856. It became Nebraska’s state capital after being renamed after President Abraham Lincoln in 1869. The city of Lincoln was granted a 130,000-acre piece of land on April 1, 1869. A few months later, the University Hall of the University of Nebraska built its first building for that school and still stands, as its oldest standing important building to this day. The Kennard House in Lincoln, NE was the first building built, and in 1870 they had the city’s first train – Burlington & Missouri River Railroad. This made Lincoln an integral part of Nebraska’s rail system.
