To Team or Not to Team: Exploring the Pros and Cons for Agents

Debunking three common misconceptions about real estate teams.

I’m excited to discuss the topic of whether joining a real estate team is a smart move. Real estate teams have been around for a while, but there are still misconceptions about what they entail. Today, I want to address some of these misconceptions and provide insights for those curious about joining a team:

Myth #1: Agents on real estate teams earn less. One common myth is that agents on real estate teams make less money than those working independently. However, this notion is far from the truth. Recent studies and local panels have shown that a significant percentage of agents on real estate teams actually make more money than solo agents. The key factors include higher home sales, better training, and enhanced negotiation skills. This myth doesn’t hold up when you look at the data.

“There are a lot of popular conceptions about real estate teams, and most of the negative ones aren’t true.”

Myth #2: Agents on their own have more time and freedom. The idea that solo agents have more time freedom is a mixed myth. While some agents working independently might have more free time, they are often less busy than their team counterparts. Real estate teams offer numerous benefits, such as transaction and marketing support, which can save solo agents hours of work each week. Joining a real estate team can lead to improved efficiency and more time for essential tasks, including working with clients and selling more homes.

Myth #3: Newer agents are better off learning on their own. It’s a common misconception that newer agents are better off learning the ropes on their own. While hands-on experience is undoubtedly valuable, joining a real estate team can provide structured training and mentorship that accelerates your learning curve. The best training is often production-based, focusing on generating business, setting appointments, converting leads, and building long-term client relationships. Working with a team that understands the challenges agents face can be instrumental in your success.
